Site director and PIs are extraordinary great. Extremely encouraging and welcoming, really the heart and soul of the site. The senior scientists truly care about the scientific and personal development of the scientists and interns.
단점:EH&S Staff is very unprofessional. She is "out to get you" and values her own appearance within the organization over the true well being of the scientific staff.

I worked in the education division, and there were lots of opportunities to get involved with interesting research projects. Everyone there is highly qualified and committed to producing high quality work.

Project timelines are short, often only a year. not effective processes for starting new research directions - Lacking in scientific leadership. The advanced technologies and systems division (ATSD) in particular is a mess. - Hard to start new research directions here because funding is difficult to get and there are not... good staffing processes - difficult to get on projects because there are often not enough hours available. project work is not stable - Management doesn’t understand the challenges faced by staff. poor communication and often environment is not inclusive. Many strategic errors include poor choices of core competencies, a misguided emphasis on high $$ contracts at the expense of smaller contracts, and bad management/leadership at all levels.

SRI International is one of those behind-the-scenes companies that helped create the modern world. Everything from Disney World to the computer mouse to Apple's now famous Siri personal assistant originated through SRI research engineers. The company has great work ethics and fierce loyalty to its workforce. Great benefits plans as well.
단점:SRI is a west coast operation for the most parts. The larger extent of its east coast work force focuses on government contracts whose job requirements are dictated by government requirements. This ties the hands of the hiring process for the best candidates.

Free parking; subsidized cafeteria; commuting benefits/subsidies; non-management staff are talented and generally congenial; opportunities for employee-sponsored professional development (conference and training attendance).
단점:Low salary for the area and the position; limited opportunity for advancement; "merit" salary increases do not keep up with inflation; individual center management does not believe that their job involves creating an atmosphere to encourage ongoing professional and problem-solving discourse between employees as opposed to anonymous complaining on yearly performance reviews; management focuses on negative and fails... to recognize positive performance; management is very top down. In certain centers, you will do well if you can become the manager's pet and part of the clique, and if you do not address problems directly. You will fail if you identify and try to solve problems in a professional manner and haven't pandered to management. Job security is the victim of favoritism. Beware of centers in the institution that do not embody the ethos of SRI's claim to be the "Soul of Silicon Valley" in terms of equity in treatment of employees and reneging on agreements related to professional support/employment.

There is no real strategy or plan to improve things or an idea of where the industry around us is in the valley. The corporate groups seem to have a very toxic environment.

Freedom to work on a lot of different small projects, especially if you take initiative and have an interest in picking up new skills. Nice people and good work/life balance. Low turnover is a testament to the fact that people enjoy working here.
단점:Salaries aren't super competitive if your skillset is valuable to the big silicon valley tech companies. Not a ton of career advancement opportunities if you aren't interested in writing lots of proposals and/or being a supervisor. Advancement also slow because of the low turnover.

단점:No much upward mobility because of flat org and most people stay in leadership roles for a long time. Some disconnect between researchers and upper management on priorities and correct processes. Unrealistic time frames promised to clients. Not good at managing client expectations.

단점:While SRI has a positive reputation, the internal work environment is toxic. We are always short-staffed and need to work long hours to get the work done, but the pay does not reflect it. Leadership does not genuinely appreciate staff sacrifices and typically expects staff to go beyond a regular work day to complete the work. Growth opportunities are almost non-existent. Promotions are given based on how many years you've been with the company, not based on your skillset. There are definitely people at this company who perpetuate some serious prejudices, which makes it difficult to feel pride for the company or comfortable around these colleagues.

Great place to work when there is business. There is a lot of opportunity to learn to analytical techniques if you are actively searching. Never too busy where you are unable to take time off. Management is very understanding of when tasked need to be completed.
단점:Contract based work means you are out of a job if the contracts reach their end. The room for growth is pretty low. You're given a job title based on education background and then can increase your grade level over time but would need to get a higher degree to make any noticeable change.

단점:The fundamentals are grounded in Washington DC -- heavy attention to federal compliance and government accounting rules. This is sharply out of sync with innovation in Silicon Valley. The scientists are stressed by federal rules and too much financial pressure -- each year, less time for the science and more demand for scientists to spend time on fundraising, bureaucracy and powerpoint creation.

You will occasionally come into contact, and work with some of the most amazingly brilliant minds in their fields. This is a very unique company, doing very unique things. They make the world a better place.
단점:Different groups or business units within SRI often have different agendas, so while they can sometimes come together and synergize to produce fantastic results, more often, they end up working against each other. This ranges from mildly annoying to catastrophically frustrating.

Organization works on some amazing projects around Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, Engineering, and Bioscience. Get to work with a lot of smart people.
단점:SRI is a non-profit, which makes it difficult to compete in the Valley. A lot of people have worked there too long and there can be a lack of flexibility in thinking. Senior Management is trying to "shake up" thinking, but change is slow. Infrastructure is woefully dated. Annual Bonuses are limited to higher level staff.

단점:Many project mangers have no real management experience. The organization is scared of audits and many administrative changes (including IT) serve only that purpose. The work is generally interesting, but is often under-funded. Little emphasis is put on making things actually work longer then a demo.

SRI is full of very smart, committed people, many of whom have worked at SRI for decades.. Their sweet spot is tackling large, challenging, complex problems that require a multi-disciplinary team. Their "best" clients US government agencies with solid funding.
단점:Long times between applying for funding and receiving it; high overhead rate which limits the client pool to larger, deep pocketed entities (i.e. not start-ups); inefficient. legacy systems that drive up overhead; constant pressure on technical staff to meet high "sold time" targets; lack of employee mentoring and development program.

SRI produces some amazing new discoveries as part of their applied research and development activities. The work is fast paced, interesting, and the teams consist of very knowledgeable staff in general.
단점:One of the very alluring benefits at SRI is the royalty sharing program. As an inventor, you are given a portion of the money earned from your inventions if they are successful. This is paid out over several years presumably as incentive to keep the employees at the company so they will create the next great technology. If your program is very successful, SRI has a history of spinning the technology out. After... years of dedication, generating patents, long hours, and finally making a technology successful - the real truth about SRI's business practices became apparent. The sale of spin off completed successfully while our team was still employed by SRI which should make us eligible for royalties. Over the next month offers were made to team members from the spin off. SRI gave the employees a choice - accept a huge pay cut and go with the spin off or be terminated. Either way, we were cut out of the royalties from the deal which was substantial income - a carrot that had motivated us to work as hard as we did. This leaves the royalties remaining to be distributed among the remaining team members (i.e. the management folks that forced us out).

Some good people, exposure to expensive lab equipment, pay and benefits good.
단점:Culture is very undesirable long-term; both manipulation and incompetency from managers, and good ol' boy systems in place. Almost no one on my team was happy. The work was not satisfying either-- it was mostly busywork, with little actual progress in anything. My advice to anyone accepting a position here would be to stay for a couple years, get all the experience you can, and move on before the culture gets to... you. I wish I had left much sooner.

Depending on the division, great people working on important problems. Good pay. Flexible culture. Be your own boss in many situations. Nice area in Menlo Park, near downtown.
단점:Dependent on government money, so fiscally uneven and layoffs are not uncommon. Experience is highly variable across the institute and there is little motivation and even disincentives to work collaboratively.
