I recently joined Perkins & Company in the Tax Department. It is definitely a unique accounting firm. The Manifesto and Purpose & Values on the company website are unlike anything I've seen elsewhere in public accounting. Having worked here for a while, I can say it is an accurate depiction of the company and people. It seems the compensation info on Glassdoor is not current. The offer I received was very... competitive and well above my expectation, which was based upon the ranges listed here.
단점:I wish the audit and tax departments were better connected.

Perkins is an awesome place to work. - It is a very close-knit and collaborative team atmosphere- you will never have to deal with politics and never have to worry about your peers backstabbing to climb past you. - We are generally all friends, all care about the team’s success, all interested in making positive changes, all high performing, all want to grow and better ourselves, and Perkins as an employer... supports all of that. - The shareholder group is supportive of individual goals, interests, and career goals and are extremely accessible to all levels. - The culture is fun and vibrant and evolves constantly as new people join and add to it. We spend a lot of time just having fun and there is never a dull moment. - There is a clear path for growth and everyone involved wants everyone to succeed. There is constant mentorship, coaching, and feedback and individual goals are taken directly into consideration as part of that. - There is strong support for giving back to the community. Whether through board service, our annual ‘Day of Giving’, our holiday food drive, philanthropy via not-for-profit sponsorship and giving, and more, an emphasis is placed on being key contributors to Portland in more than just our key services. - Perkins occupies the sweet spot in terms of size and client base. We are not so big that new staff are siloed into one area allowing everyone to learn and grow very quickly with a diverse set of skills and base of knowledge - within your first year you are already touching many pieces of an audit, and experiencing several jobs. Meanwhile, we are not so small that we are missing out on complex accounting issues and just babysitting clients all of the time. This is all capped off by our membership in the BDO Alliance which provides great access to tons of resources like their audit software and methodology, technical resources, support for clients with out of town components so we don’t have to constantly travel, great training, etc. It is really a perfect spot in my eye.
단점:Perkins can suffer from many of the normal ‘Public Accounting’ shortfalls. - We work a lot of hours and there can be a lot of pressure to make the job your number one priority over personal, mental, and familial health - the old adage of live-to-work vs. work-to-live. - There is often a disconnect between the benefits in the Audit department and the Tax department - a big piece of this is extra time off. One... department is rewarded extra hours off during the summer for working extra hours during busy season and the other is not - despite individuals in both departments working over the ‘55-busy-season-minimum’ at times. This can feel inequitable at times. The auditors often joke that they are ‘auditors at a tax firm’ - not a key and equally valued component. - There is little transparency in pay equity. None of us ever know where we line up or how pay is determined. At times, new hires may make more or the same as experienced staff (which may be industry standard, not sure) communicating to those with experience that they are only as valuable or less valuable than someone with no experience. Nobody is complaining about wages overall as we are on par with industry norms, but it is an equity thing, a way that worth is communicated. - It can work out that Seniors and sometimes experienced staff are doing their own jobs AND the jobs of the positions above them at the same time and for years while only being paid and recognized for their own jobs. This is in part driven by turnover (a public accounting problem), but does suck sometimes. It does help your grow quickly but it can lead to burnout. - While pay is good, our benefits kind of stink. I believe our 401k plan is fairly standard when looking at larger firms but that doesn’t make it good. Our health insurance is crazy expensive if you want your family on it - just not feasible at all. It is free for the employee but if you aren’t single with no kids you are going to pay a lot of money.

-Work/life balance is a priority for management, and it show through. This is the best I've seen a public accounting firm do as far as work-life balance goes -Nice office, recently remodeled -The people there are great!
단점:-That work/life balance comes at a cost, namely compensation. They typically pay less than the going market rate you'd find at a similar sized corp. -Emphasis on quantity of billable hours is annoying, and is the only metric that really matters in performance reviews determining compensation (despite saying otherwise)

Perkins does a great job of hosting happy hours, company kickball teams, and more than brings the employees closer together. Also, there are a lot of great people at the company.
단점:There is a significant disconnect between managers/partners and the staff/seniors working for them. Staff/seniors begin to feel overworked and underappreciated. Communication regarding performance is infrequent and inconsistent. Very little training provided to ensure continued growth of employees.

The people at Perkins & Co are the reason this company is so great. You will build strong relationships with coworkers at all levels of the firm. There are many company gatherings and after work activities to hang out and have fun outside of work. Management is there to help you learn and grow through your career, and is always willing to help when needed. There are many opportunities to move up within the firm... as the company continues to grow and moves into new areas of business. You will get exposure to many types of industries and sizes of clients to work with and management will help you get on the engagements you are most interested in working on.
단점:The summer months are usually more stressful than the actual busy season when the firm is under staffed.

The people here are nice to work with, and the downtown location is convenient. They also provide a lot of training and have a decent network and computer speeds.
단점:There's not a lot of communication or feedback to let you know what you need to change. They tell you they want you to succeed but they don't really provide a great roadmap for how to get promoted. Also, the billable hour targets are unrealistic and when you break down your salary by the hours they want you to work annually, it's kind of depressing. It's also a political environment, where if you don't get on well... with your Managers and Shareholders you are most likely going to have a miserable time here.

단점:Salary not on par with market for position. No transportation/commuting benefits. Non-billable employees very clearly not recognized and appreciated as others - at least that's the impression. Health insurance very expensive for family.

They will treat you well if you are on their good side. The people that work here are very hard workers and if you put in your time here, you will be a cultured professional if that is what you desire. Working in downtown Portland is okay if that is an atmosphere that is to your taste.
단점:It is a lie that the salaries have been adjusted to the market. No one who is at a staff or senior level here is happy with their salary. Those who do not talk about this with upper management are either too afraid or they are blind.

This company has an amazing culture. The employees genuinely care about their place of employment and are actively involved in contributing to the culture and success of the firm at all levels. The employees are not just co-workers, but friends...which really makes this place hard to leave. The company provides a lot of benefits that are typically overlooked by other companies: donut day, dessert day, free soda,... popcorn, oat meal, juice, tea, coffee, busy season catered meals, etc. They offer a lot of social activities that you can get involved with that help contribute to the company's culture as well, ranging from the wellness committee events, kick ball, happy hours in the bistro, holiday parties, giving back campaigns, etc.
단점:When I was there the company was not paying in line with market for my position; however, I have heard from former coworkers that this has since been corrected.

We have an amazing group of people that care about each employees' growth and development. I also am supporting with a flexible work schedule and balancing my personal and professional lives.
단점:Communication is something the firm as a whole has been working on but it still seems inconsistent. Additionally, we have compression issues that are challenging but have recently instituted some new policies that will hopefully help ease the burden.

Great environment that enforces a life balance all the way from the top. This is important in an industry that requires so many hours. The hours are still long (seasonally) but I never feel that I am reeling to leave work at the end of the day. Great people. Great office. Great management.
단점:Employee evaluations should be be more frequent so we can better understand our progress. However, management always seems able to meet to discuss these concerns.

Great management and communication. Good culture. Everyone here seems to enjoy each other. It doesn't feel like you are competing with your peers (as it did in other firms I have worked for). The partners respect that we all have personal lives outside of our careers. They offer flexible schedules.
단점:Compensation seems to be the area that most employees complain about. If money is the most important thing to you then this firm probably won't be a good fit.

They have very high standards and the product they give to their client is practically perfect. Working in P-Town is a huge blast and you deal with clients that are beyond the scope of having their documents come in a shoe box. You feel like a part of something bigger when you come into work and the office is very nice and maintained.
단점:Increase salaries to be competitive with mid-sized firms rather than small firms. Consider promoting based on efficiency rather than hours worked and where you stand politically within the company. Practice what you preach when it comes to time frames for promotions.

This can be seen in many firmwide events including breakfasts, dinners, in office happy hours, etc. -Very great opportunities for growth and promotions as you move along in your career.
단점:-Pretty heavy hours -Understaffed for some time at the senior level. Ofter there was an expectation that work could just be delegated down to new staff, which added a lot to the senior or manager's plate on back end.

Pretty friendly people. -Decent workload - Things get busy in the busy season but this not that crazy coming from a bigger firm. -Decent market presence - Other business around Portland area know Perkins and they have a great market presence.
단점:THEY NEED TO PAY MORE. I feel like I am working at McDs. They really do not appreciate the effort the staff and seniors are contributing. CPA firms around the region pay around 10% more than Perkins. They need to cut down the admin overhead and use that resources to bump the auditors and tax accountants salary.

There is the opportunity to work in fairly large clients, which offers good learning opportunities and exposure to a variety of industries.
단점:Pay is considerably less than market. The shareholders know this yet refuse to address the issue. If you have to give a ten minute speech at a quarterly meeting trying to convince everyone that they are not underpaid, you have a problem. The politics can be rough. Regardless if ability, not having the right connections with managers means that you will get left behind during scheduling.

Perkins is filled with people who will go out of their way to be friendly and help you to thrive. Asking for help and being driven to be great at what you do is the key to success here. The benefits are good and they do a good job customizing them to employee preferences.
단점:Public accounting is a nutty field - the hours are insane at least 10 consecutive weeks a year, and even if those hours don't apply to your particular role, being around stressed and sleep deprived people continually takes its own toll.

Perkins & Company is a great place to start your career in public accounting. The company cares about its people and its clients and it shows. There is a great deal of investment in software and training which allows for upward mobility if you want it (big four, regional). However, they really encourage growth from within so it's also a great place to work your way up. I appreciate the depth of knowledge my coworkers bring to the table along with the friendly office environment.
단점:Public accounting is what it is and while the company does what it can to make busy season less painful, it's the industry we are in and there will be long hours. The reimbursement for CPA exam materials and testing could be better.

Great company events, parties and perks. Respectable company name with a well established office in Downtown Portland. They also have really good connections with the downtown area, so moving up in public or leaving to a high position in private accounting is an option.
단점:Lower the billable hour goal and create fair salaries among all employees. If we are going to give our employees salaries on a small market basis, then we also need to give our employees small office hours as well. It it not fair for shareholders to say we are large versus small only when it benefits them.

Once you've shown you're serious about making a go of it at Perkins (it takes about six months of demonstrating an ability to respond well to constructive criticism and willingness to pitch in to get work done under deadline), management goes all in for you. You can tailor your CPE, the niches you work in, your hours, who you primarily work with. Expectations for change hours are transparent and feedback on job... performance is ongoing. Annual evaluations and promotion/compensation decisions rarely seem out of the blue. Perkins values smart, loyal people. Management demonstrates business savvy but also a dedication to doing the right thing.
단점:Perkins is a public accounting firm, and comes with the usual industry hazards. Compensation is based on the expectation that you will work 2350 hours a year, and it's probable that there will be 3-4 weeks a year where you work more than the stated max of the 55 hour week. Don't expect to have a life February-April.

Full of cool people who genuinely want to do quality work, build a great career, and have a good time. Attitudes are some of the most progressive in the industry and there is a huge focus on technology.
단점:People could do a better job of being honest with each other, more often. It's like the family that gets along really well so when there is an argument or a conflict, it feels really out of place, so it gets avoided.
