-Hourly rates for skilled trades could be higher given the isolation (7 hour drive to Winnipeg) -like most large companies they don't like change and when it does happen it takes a long time. - Some skilled trades are paid more then others - turnover in skilled trades is extremely high - majority of surface operations (smelter and nickel refinery are closing Q3 of 2018)

Very poor regard for safety with the bottom line is making money. Brazil tries to run the Canadian operations the same way they run their operations in third world countries. Very low moral amongst employees. Non union employees have no protection and are... laid off at will. Company has no use for unions and has caused strikes as long as 1 year.

Where to start? This company is largely managed through its headquarters in Brazil. They are dealing with a massive disaster in Brazil which affected the lives of thousands of people. Senior Management has been scrambling to communicate the "New Values" and "New Leadership Behaviours" to make things right while continuing to behave in questionable ways. You cannot teach an old dog new tricks! They've been doing... things with an autocratic style for so many years that people are terrified to speak up. That's the main cause of the disastrous accident that killed so many people: employees at the frontline not speaking up when they needed to fix things. On the surface they say "we need to change this culture with the new values" but they are failing miserably at this because they continue doing exactly the opposite of what they preach. Management is two faced and will only do what benefits them most. While people may seem nice, most of those in managerial positions have an agenda in which you are one of their pawns. Moreover, Senior Management is more focused on rewarding employees from Brazil by offering them managerial roles in Canada, rather than rewarding other more suitable ones who are already in Canada. As an employee, you have very limited to no chances for advancement, whatever your performance might be, unless you speak Portuguese and become friends with your manager. Morale is not great due to the declining market conditions resulting in continuous cost-cutting measures. They have no mercy to fire people who have long tenure and good experience. Even some people who have been hired this year have left due to the lack of training and basic support to do their jobs. Turnover is high in most departments. The worst department I've dealt with was Human Resources. Their Brazilian leaders have no clue about Canadian business culture, practices and regulations. They work things around to suppress the opinions of more knowledgeable Canadian employees. They are the first ones that manage by fear and intimidation. I cannot really call them leaders. What else could I expect of line managers? My manager was also Brazilian and, while seemingly friendly, was totally closed to receiving feedback. She didn't even know how to write a professional email in English. Everything with her was a nice chit-chat but at any point in time the big decisions came in a top-down style and no one could oppose them. I also faced the unfortunate situation that my coworkers were bitter and unresponsive to my communication, so I felt miserable on a daily basis. Only one of the HR reps was sympathetic and listened to me but couldn't help me much due to what I mentioned above. To make things worse, the analysts and specialists spent time dealing with a huge workload that led to mistakes and rework all the time. All processes and steps were so bureaucratic and nonsensical. I've worked in other messy places but nothing like this! Not recommended!!!

I've been with the company for almost a year now. I had a horrendous onboarding experience because of my manager's total lack of support which is still prevalent. Maybe I'm just unlucky as the other teams seem more cohesive and their bosses more human. I'm sticking around until finding an opportunity elsewhere. It's a very top-down, political and complex organization going through change, therefore very messy... to navigate. There are tons of obsolete and cumbersome processes that make anyone cringe. If you're Brazilian or at least fluent in Portuguese you'll probably get far; otherwise forget it! And beware of HR: only lip service and not your friends.

Very bad atmosphere morale is very low among ground floor employees. The long harbour site is very overstaffed in management and understaffed on the floor. Some of the management are sadists who go out of their way to make people miserable and scared. They constantly bully certain individuals. It's a common punishment to suspend people unpaid for making mistakes instead of trying to educate them on what they did wrong. Very little training and mentoring provided if any.

Sadly.. Canada has lost a large portion of a very proud mining heritage since Vale Brazil took over Inco and is burning everything to the ground. This company has lost all contact with reality. What they say and do are usually a 360 of one another to the point the staff feels a large lack of control of their roles, daily lives and long term outcome of their performance no matter how good they are as professionals.... Staff now run around in a constant state of confusion and fear. CYOA has now become a blood sport. I have watched the decline over the years and it makes me terribly sad that the once proud mining heritage that Inco created is now gone. Complaints have been made for the amount of non Canadians they hire to fill roles actual Canadians CAN do. Also they have been pushing all Canadian Managers out and pulling in Sr roles from Brazil who bring in the systemic fear-base model. In so many words they tell staff they should be afraid and to perform like puppets. Most areas largely speak Portugese now due to the amount of expats that came over. You never know what anyone is talking about and sometimes they are talking about work which at minimum should be English. If you do not speak Portuguese you will be squeezed out, or if they keep you, your role will be diminished to the point you leave in defeat. Same issues from a decade ago as well culture is very hierarchical and bureaucratic. No tools to support the expected work load.

Some genuinely nice co-workers. Low base pay but relatively good bonus. Excellent Benefits. That is all.

There are so many undesirable things I can list about this company, but I will focus on the core issues: - Employee retention is poor. Why? If you're not of that nationality, you get zero progression or transfer opportunities. Most managers favour their own and will replace and/or hire their kind to fill in senior positions in their global offices wherever possible. - Are you someone vocal, full of ideas and... are able to conjure suggestions to improve workflow processes? Please try not to do that in Vale, not only will your ideas and suggestions get shot down by the management, you will be regarded as a "problem child". Prepare to kiss your future in Vale goodbye. The best part? That teammate of yours from the native land with similar ideas will get recognized! - Management is highly political. Go against them, and prepare to kiss your progression goodbye. - A good number of employees get soaked and influenced by the Vale culture. What happens? They'll learn to do finger pointing when things goes wrong.

Salaries are good compared to others companies in New-Camedonia (but low on an international standard). Some positions offer a 4/3 days roster, and 3 days long week-ends are always good to take in a exotic island.

단점:

Extremely bad relationships between employer and employees (HR considers employees as enemies). Relationships are awful with the local community as well, to the point it can be dangerous to show up in uniform in some parts of the territory.

Management is a mess. Employees always kept in the dark and poor performers get away with everything. Nepotism is widespread, so the only way to succeed is by brownnosing and following orders, no questions asked. Very political workplace. Multiple mass layoffs. Long tenure employees constantly replaced with pawns from Brazil. They conjure new practices every week without intention of honouring them. They tell people to speak up without fear of retribution but they will use it against you. Beware.
