Great pay and benefits along with a Christmas bonus, which is usually a months salary. Paid parking or paid bus pass. Currently located north of downtown Dallas next door to the Nasher sculpture center close to plenty of places for lunch.
단점:Difficult commute both to and from work, spend about an hour each way to drive 25 miles. UGH!!! Having a difficult director who runs things from Houston and doesn't really understand the challenges in another office. Would be nice to keep things local.

Two things stand out in the pros column: (1) annual bonuses of a month's salary for everyone who is a full-time employee with more than one year of service; and (2) paid time off of 20 days for new hires to 42 days for more tenured employees.
단점:Unfortunately, the challenges far outweigh the pros. First, the office culture is still dominated by the good ole boy mentality and a distinct air of a caste system permeates the office. Attorneys are placed in a lofty position far above the staff while the staff are subservient and inferior. For example, female attorneys who take maternity leave are given three months of fully paid time off while female staff... are given six weeks of time off at 60% pay, which is an unfair disparity. Hirely attorneys are quickly admonished to not fraternize with the staff because the staff are "beneath" them and the attorneys need to recognize the hierarchy. Staff are discouraged from expressing any complaints about ill-treament by the attorneys because the attorneys are "superior" and high dollar billing attorneys are given carte blanche to act out however their mood dictates. Prima Donna Partner gets mad over losing a court hearing and decides to throw a stapler at the assistant. Does PD Partner get reprimanded? No. The assistant, however, may be counseled in how to stroke PD's ego so (s)he will feel better. Any staff member who dares to deviate outside of this expectation and actually complain about an attorney's bad behavior is labeled as a "troublemaker" and no amount of "brownie points" earned will remove that label. In fact, the unfortunate "complainer" is often then the target of HR and management. The "troublemaker" receives lower raises, no advancement opportunities, and are usually eventually terminated. These expressions are not just my feelings. They are, instead, based upon my own personal experience while I was employed there.

Great compensation compared to the cost of living. The quality of people here is very high, and most people are friendly and generally care about you as a human being. The Firm is generally well-managed, and the Leadership is very forthcoming about firm results, prospects, and how compensation is apportioned. Very low leverage (it's below 2:1). The Firm has great exit opportunities; it's the clear Big Dog in... the Houston legal market.
단점:It's BigLaw, so the hours can be very unpredictable. There will be weeks where all you do is work or sleep, and curse your decision to go to law school.

V&E has some of the kindest attorneys I have met -- they're very smart people, but it's their kindness that really struck me. V&E also appears committed to leading, not following, when it comes to associate compensation increases. They take care of their young attorneys, and they make sure you learn. Sometimes I would get a call from a senior partner saying, could you bring me X, Y, and Z? I'd bring them down to... his office, and he'd say thanks and we'd chat for a bit, and he'd pretend to look at the clock and be surprised and say "Oh, hey, I have a call with our CEO's client right now... do you want to stick around and participate?" I realized he didn't really need X Y and Z -- he just wanted me to come over to his office so I could listen in on a _very_ important phone call. Very cool.
단점:The same downsides that exist at any mega-firm. In particular, I am in the camp that would spend far less on events, cocktail parties, and recruiting lunches. I think the firm should trust the integrity, kindness, and intelligence of its attorneys to attract talent, and not stoop to spending tens of thousands of dollars on recruiting events. There are smart law students out there who would appreciate being paid... $3000 more each summer rather than having parties every night in their honor, and it's those lawyers that V&E should target. Other downsides include that the firm is a slow adapter of technology.

Vinson & Elkins is a very diverse firm as far as "staff" is concerned. The Firm treats their employees with respect and the time off that you get cannot be beat by any other firm in the State of Texas (in my personal opinion). The Firm automatically gives you 20+ days off during a year and the year-end bonuses are great - a legal secretary will get a month's salary considering you are employed with the Firm for an... entire year, otherwise, your bonus will be pro-rated. Other bonuses include an extra paycheck at the end of the year IF the firm does well year-round and during review time, employees can also get an additional paycheck if you get a "glowing" review, but I never got one! For the record, my reviews were always outstanding.
단점:Too many changes and sometimes unexpected lay-offs that you definitely don't see coming your way. According to some employees, there are only a few secretaries who get the extra paycheck bonus during review time. Some secretaries believe that if you do not work for a partner, or a "top-notch" attorney in the office, you are pretty much left without a bonus during review time. Some secretaries were let go just a... year or two prior to retirement and in my opinion, those secretaries should just be left alone - they are not harming anyone. Not a good way to let someone go especially when that person has devoted 20+ years to the firm.

V&E New York is a a good place to work if you're looking for a New York lifestyle without New York Biglaw firm attitudes. Because the firm is based in Houston, TX, the New York office has a bit more of a congenial attitude when compared to other New York firms. Most of the partners and almost all senior associates are willing to teach to younger associates and are interested in their development. The New York... office is growing quickly, and V&E is putting emphasis on having a wider presence in New York. The office is smaller, so you get to know your coworkers.
단점:As with any big law firm, the hours can be a beast. Your personal plans have absolutely no impact on when you'll be working. People were told to reschedule their already planned (and paid for) vacations in order to work on various client projects. There is not a whole lot of feedback, so you can be unsure as how you're doing in the office. The drawbacks to working in the New York office of Vinson & Elkins are... similar to working at any other large law firm - hours are long and the work can be a bit mind numbing.

It has great benefits, health, 401K, etc. They offer discount movie tickets and corporate discounts to the gym. They offer paid jean days and put the money toward charitable causes.
단점:There is a great divide between the attorneys and the administrative staff. If you are not an attorney or do not work in one of the favored administrative departments you are probably over-worked, under paid and under appreciated.

Good pay and benefits. Full health, dental & vision is only about 60 bucks per month for regular admin staff. there's also a $500 per year education voucher. Most of the staff is easy to get along with even senior attorneys will say hi in the hallways.
단점:Not as willing to promote employees as they previously where. Old HR staff used to encourage staff to apply for promotions to move ahead, some current ones can barely be asked simple questions about a position.
