"Good company as a first job"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

Many people were high energy and very smart. Clients were easy to work with and seemed to value the work we do. A variety of different industries to work in provided a consultant with a lot to learn.

단점:

So much focus on assessment that it started to get boring. Upper management seems to like the status quo, when it comes to what the core service offerings are. It's hard to find a way to change things up in a politically tactful way.

"Great place to work!"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

The company has a very flexible and generous vacation day package. It is "employee-focused," so there is much attention on work-life balance and personal/professional development. The location (midtown Manhattan) is phenomenal!

단점:

It's a tight-knit community. You have to be comfortable working with a small group of people every day. The business structure is in a development stage, so patience and team-work is a must!

장점:

단점:

Assessments are supposedly evidenced based but they are rudely subjective, performed by poorly skilled consultants who have never worked in listed companies, delivering baseless judgements, claiming conclusions to be rigorous and scientific. It's a classic case of emperor has no clothes...there is nothing but subjective judgement behind their assessments. Do not take them seriously.

Great clients, interesting work, benefits (bonus, personal development), travel, stimulating, impressive colleagues, central london location - feel you are in the heart of things. Really interesting clients, very stimulating environment, keeps you on your toes, feel your being stretched.

단점:

Some aspects of the work became repetitive but the other aspects far outweighed that. Some people mentioned the politics but they are a fact of life in consultancies. If you can't handle it you shouldnt be in the game.

People who are really bright, caring interesting and interested. A sincere desire to help people be the best they can be (internally and for clients). Opportunities to grab if you can work the system.

YSC brings interesting insight to clients and has some very strong individuals working there.

단점:

They have no respect for the personal times of individuals or work-life balance. Very poor at balancing work assignments across resources and the logic with which they assign people don't make sense. Leadership says they are supportive of people, but they are not, unless you are a favorite

"Sleepwalking"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

- If you figure out how the system operates, you can have a lot of flexibility. Choose to do what you want, when you want. Fit your job around your life. - Clients regularly knock on the door, meaning the underweight business development activities tend to be ok for the business’s performance. - Incredibly interesting and meaningful work. - Two or three industry leading psychologists to learn from. Find who they... are and work very very closely with them. - An organisational culture that is very supportive of personal circumstances. - Good location, nice offices and colleagues who want the best for the organisation. A lot of good will exists in the organisation.

단점:

- If you fail to figure out how the system operates, you will be on the receiving end of others’ flexibility. You could burn out and feel that it is impossible to meet expectations. This often depends on how motivated your manager is to support you. - An underconfident and underexperienced leadership team means that business decisions are rarely taken or communicated with the business. Creates chaos, with everyone... doing their own thing (see point about flexibility). - Low level of commercial capability across the firm means that financial performance is erratic and profit drivers are poorly understood. - Years of underinvestment in operations and marketing restrict the organisation’s ability to grow or improve. Too much manual working and outdated practices. - Quality and consistency of work is declining, following a high turnover of highly experienced staff and little recruitment at senior levels. - Poor discipline and performance management processes means that poor organisational citizen behaviours are tolerated. - Lack of communication across the organisation means that new thinking fails to get integrated. - A firm of psychologists means that everything will be your fault in some way, but you learn to live with that.

"A great company on paper, but various holes within the interior"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

Positive general work environment within the company. People within the company as a whole are hard working very friendly and approachable. - Great benefits - A good salary

단점:

As a business that assesses, coaches and trains other businesses on various aspect including equality and culture I believe the London branch does not exercise this at all and this is evident in the lack of diversity in their staff selection.(Look through the members working there for example). This could be due to either an opinionated assumption that they can not find any good quality diverse staff members from a... majorly diverse city such as London or only a certain profile of candidates fit into a company that should be giving their clients advice on areas including diversity and cultural benefits... I don't know, call me silly but this doesn't really make sense. The culture within their admin team seemed like somewhat of a cult where once again diversity perishes. The only reason I wouldn't recommend this company to a friend is due to the fact that most of my friends would be similar to myself and therefore would not fit in to such an organisation, which is quite sad to say the least.

"Love it as a place to work"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

Everyone is very supportive, caring and interesting people. Experts in the field of leadership assessment. Take training up new consultants on how to do it very seriously. Don't try to put people in boxes/oversimplify. Nice mx of deep psychological expertise and business experience. Have brought in a lot of 'new blood' in the last two years. The 'old timers' seem very welcoming of this. Look after the staff in... terms of the little things - lovely working environment, paid for lunches, free fruit, chocolate, biscuits in the office etc. Really support part time and flexible working - unusual at a more senior level.

단점:

I think it's changed a lot for the better over the last few years but still room To improve in terms of processes and better knowledge management to make it more efficient behind the scenes.

"Great development, interesting work, talented people but its best days as an employer are probably past"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

For 20 years YSC has been the most well known and well regarded senior-assessment house in the UK. It provides great opportunities to round out your consultancy skills. It has a huge body of knowledge that comes from 25 years employing only Psychologists. It's client base is unique; you will be working at senior levels across a large proportion of the Footsie 100. There are some very good people to work... with and learn from at YSC.

단점:

Life is getting tougher for the consultants. In a business dependent on consultant skill, new ownership and management appears to have relatively few ideas for improving commercial performance beyond squeezing the consultants to deliver more and in less time. This is playing out in morale, engagement, staff-turnover and performance. They are also building a unenviable track record of failed managerial hires (CIO,... COO, CFO). The tough, demanding work (freehand individual assessment) takes a lot of skill and effort to do well; you will see the evidence of this etched on the faces of the consultants you meet. The reward and benefit packages are uncompetitive. Previous tie in programmes have produced both winners and losers and are best avoided. The net result is a reduction in the average age of the consulting team and a depletion in the general level of experience and skill. Unfortunately, despite its strong reputation, YSC is not a great place to have on your CV. Few consultants move on to better things in corporate life, with most ending up as sole traders working for themselves. Management scores low for fairness and meritocracy; what you know is less important than who you "know" in reward and promotion decisions. Senior Leadership may have changed but an unwholesome reputation is likely to continue. It is forever confused about it’s strategic position; YSC’s unique selling point – insight into the individual – is not even mentioned in the way it promotes itself.

"Be prepared to dissect yourself"

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

- Lots of hugely intelligent business and clinical psychologists, most with high levels of personal and professional integrity which makes for interesting learning and, at the individual client level high quality outputs. - I say be prepared to dissect yourself because joining YSC is as much about learning about yourself as it is applying these techniques to other people. You need rhino hide not to feel like... you're going through some development yourself - very exposing yet ultimately I think a good thing (even if deeply painful in parts) - A genuinely felt mission and ethos to be thought leaders in the personal development and leadership space. - exposure to loads of the biggest companies in the world and operating at (almost) the highest levels - typically senior and middle manager work - ability to use psychological expertise in a deep way - much more psychotherapeutic approach than some of the formulaic and process driven providers of assessment and development - every 4 years a fully paid 2 month sabbatical (NB. book summer sabbatical requests a minimum of 3 years in advance!) - Perfect for experienced, low ego people who wish to work in a one-on-one capacity and whose prior success means they can disengage from the politics of the place - Prestigious name on your CV that for many HRDs is synonymous with quality and prestige. Since leaving I have been pursued for several highly attractive and well paid talent management roles, as well as other consultancy roles.

단점:

- A veritable treadmill of assessment - albeit one-to-one, senior managerial. You HAVE to be able to take total joy from that assessment process and the coaching those interactions entail. - Lonely! An office full of people but everyone tends to be too busy to genuinely interact, talk, share, collaborate - New hires are being sped through a haphazard induction process and expected to be self-sufficient very early... on. You must be robust and inquisitive to ensure you keep on learning. You may question how you can deliver on quality when you're thrown in at the deep end and with very little support - with a hold on a large number of FTSE 100 corporate clients (ie. integrated into their recruitment and development processes), the demand for YSC services means that actual client relationship management is pretty weak. You may feel yourself being compromised in that regard - Poor salaries - not particularly competitive, perks limited to sabbatical and free lunch. Bonuses have been low for several years now. 40% VC owned now so the 'pot' will go to equity shareholders and the few stars they want to recognise (usually intimately related to the CEO - hugely nepotistic culture) - Horrendous worklife balance with an absolutely loaded diary meaning things like the [lengthy] client reports end up being done in your 'free time' BUT relatively little travel if you want (in London clients typically come to YSC, not the other way round) - Arrogance - (see point above) + a tendency to think that YSC knows it all, and client too should recognise that (very little belief that competitors exist) - therefore change tends to be forced upon the place rather than being adopted with openminded curiosity - Limited career opportunity. After a while you struggle to see how you can genuinely reinvent what you do. Ironic given the mantra to clients is that high potential ambitious individuals need to change roles and reinvent to feel reinvigorated and maintain motivation. - Paternalistic / infantalising - prepare to feel that whatever experience you had before joining is totally irrelevant. No interest will be shown in it. To prove yourself you will have to master a poorly constructed and highly subjective set of models around what makes leaders great. You will know within 2 years whether you are a wunderkind or just a regular Jo - make your decisions on the back of that - If you have little experience be careful of how long you stay in spite of the prestige name - the breadth of your skills will start to degrade/narrow to a point of feeling unemployable to anything other than assessment houses

"Great if this is the kind of work you want to do...forever...."

-0001-11-30
전체 평가: 친구에게 추천: 회사 전망:
장점:

* Great personal freedom * Relaxed, new-economy feel * intelligent colleagues * Generous compensation and benefits * Get to work with some very capable psychologists * Great learning but in a very narrow field

단점:

* Management team comprised entirely of psychologists - could explain excellent work place, but also narrow consulting opportunities and limited scope for professional breadth * Projects sound great on paper, but the daily reality is like dentistry: Once you've pulled one tooth, you've just seen the rest of your life at YSC - even if you do end up working in one of their overseas offices *Socialist mafia: Undue... thought-policing about social conscience, global warming etc... can be unpleasant and difficult to stomach if you are not a liberal socialist. Open mindedness is unusually closed to different perspectives on life. There seems to be a belief that there is a 'right way' to think. * Strong culture - be sure you fit. * It's a family business: Many members of senior management and the directors and managing directors are married to each other, related, or married to sisters of other directors. Tight at the top - you'll have to be accepted by the family if you're going to get anywhere useful long-term. * The intellectual capital at the company runs very deep - but narrow. You'll get good, very, very good at doing 1-1 assessments of senior managers, but be careful: If you EVER want to change and do something else, you'll find you've become asset specific, and unemployable in many places. * Be very careful about joining too young: ideal to join this kind of firm once you're in your 40s and you've gone as far as you want to in a blue-chip and want something different. But if you're in your 20s, stay well clear unless you're sure you want to spend the rest of your life watching other people be successful, while you ask them questions about their adventures, then write it down on a pad, and sent it to them, then read it with them, then send it to their manager, then smile, then do it again...and again...and again...
